Microworld ID

Microscopes let us see lots of different types of tiny things. We use bigger magnifications to see smaller things. We can see cells when we use a magnification of 400x, but we need to magnify 1,000,000x in order to see DNA!

Scroll over the image below to find out more about the different things in the microworld of microscopes.

You can see how the sizes of things in the microworld compare by using this interactive tool from the University of Utah.

Now you have learnt about some of the different things in our microworld, why not have a go at colouring some of them in?

Return to the microscope homepage, try our everyday objects quiz, or visit the Microsculpture exhibition website to see some of the Museum’s insects up close!
