Entiminae
Weevils are one of the mega-diverse families of insects with over 60,000 described species. Undoubtedly there are many more awaiting discovery, particularly from tropical forests. This species of short-nosed weevil is endowed with a complex covering of hairs and scales. Backlighting further highlights a fringe of specialised yellow hairs at the end of the legs, probably to help the insect grip smooth surfaces.
Collector not recorded
Brazil, pre-1900
This specimen came into the Museum from the German collectors Michael Christian Sommer and Johann Andre Ferdinand Baden, dating it to the late 19th century. Sommer traded with partners from a range of countries, including Brazil. The actual collector of the weevil is not recorded, perhaps reflecting common practice at the time of not crediting local collaborators.
