Natural History Investigators

Natural History Investigators is for 14–16 year olds who are curious about animals, fossils, specimens, evolution, and all things science and natural history.

Over five Saturday sessions in Spring and Autumn, you will explore the museum, work with real specimens, meet scientists, and carry out your own hands-on investigations. Sessions run on designated Saturdays from 14:00–16:00.

This is not just a club where you sit and listen. Investigators get close to the collections, ask big questions, handle objects, examine evidence, and discover how museums help us understand the natural world. Recent participants especially loved the touchable taxidermy, bird displays, varied specimens, and the chance to do real research in a museum. One young person said, "I learnt a lot of new stuff in 5 weeks, when can I come again?" Another said, "I found people like me and got to ask scientists questions."

The feedback has been exceptionally strong. In 2025, participants rated the programme 4.7/5 for activities, 5/5 for mentor knowledge and enthusiasm, and 4.9/5 for hands-on participation and enjoyment. 100% said they left with increased or sustained high interest in natural history, and 100% wanted to keep learning more.

It is a structured, welcoming programme that builds confidence, curiosity, and connection. Especially for young people, it is a chance to meet people, explore behind the scenes, and feel part of something scientific. As one participant put it: "Finding a community with like-minded people was the best part."
